About the Book

Life After Crime condenses forty years of one psychologist’s experiences into one brutal semifictional story. This memoir illustrates the stories of real people, some of whom have given permission to use their names and other characters that have been altered for anonymity. Among the people treated was Deliris Vasquez, the sole survivor in the award-winning documentary by Jon Alpert of the HBO series Life of Crime, and the movie documentary Life of Crime 1984-2020. This movie was present at the Venice, New York and New Jersey film festivals and has been called “an epic work of documentary filmmaking.” (Rob Aldam – Back Seat Mafia)

Life After Crime is a companion book to How to Make Group Psychotherapy Work, an instructional manual for mental health workers. Dr. Coleman and colleagues Professor Roger Cunningham and Dr. Maxine Bradshaw believe that psychotherapy, especially group psychotherapy, is in the “diaper stage” with more to develop to make psychotherapy more effective. Life After Crime demonstrates how groups with large numbers of people use music, relaxation techniques, emotive processes and healing secrets to treat addictions, anxieties, depression and other mental health issues.

Clients and professionals share comments on their experiences:

“I got in touch with the issues that caused my drug problem. I loved these groups.”

“I have seen countless numbers of our clients begin to heal from deep emotional wounds through participation in these groups.”

“This book gives deep insight into the causes and treatments for mental illness.”

“Life After Crime shows how real people develop deep seated, hard to treat mental illnesses, and then shows in detail how they were healed.”

“Why don’t more psychologists run groups like these?”
